Fujitsu Software Corporation Announces Web and COM Enhancements for COBOL

Fujitsu COBOL continues to lead the way in Web and Windows integration for COBOL applications.

San Jose, California, February 20, 2001 - Fujitsu Software Corporation today announced that Fujitsu COBOL 6.1, which provides users with significant new Web, COM and development features, will begin shipping this month. Fujitsu COBOL is a strong and steadily evolving, Windows-focused product that offers a robust development path into the future.

Fujitsu COBOL 6.1 adds:

  • The ability to call COBOL COM objects from Active Server Pages (ASP) used widely on the Web, and from Visual Basic applications
  • The ability to call Java classes from COBOL
  • Support for the Netscape Server API
  • A Web Application Wizard for building templates and projects for Web applications

"With this exciting release COBOL can now be integrated smoothly into the leading edge Web and Windows application environments," said Ron Langer, Director of Languages for Fujitsu Software Corporation. "We are opening up new avenues for the large number of programmers and IS leaders who are looking for ways to take advantage of their existing code and expertise."

Fujitsu COBOL, which was showcased in Microsoft's .NET announcements, continues to drive COBOL forward into the 21st century.

"COBOL has withstood the test of time and continues to be recognized for its business-focused features," said Mr. Langer. "In the constantly evolving software market it is important to have a product that combines reliability and integration with the latest technologies."

Other features of the release include: ISAPI and SAF session management and file upload subroutines; new class libraries; ADO support within PowerCOBOL, Fujitsu's GUI solution for COBOL programmers; and many other enhancements requested by the growing Fujitsu COBOL development community.

Fujitsu COBOL 6.1 and PowerCOBOL can both be used to port existing legacy COBOL applications to the PC environment. These applications often perform better in this environment, freeing mainframes and midrange systems for other tasks. In addition, Fujitsu COBOL systems are easily adaptable to the Internet platform, with minimal changes. The programming language's longevity and durability ensures that such Internet integration projects are achievable by IT departments that use COBOL systems. As a result, COBOL is playing a vital role in the E-commerce revolution by providing the support systems that are required by all businesses. The Fujitsu COBOL 6.1 product is available in three packages: Standard, Professional and Enterprise.
